A Gentle and Quiet Spirit

"When they hurled their insults at [Jesus], he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed...Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelery and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

What does it mean to have a gentle and quiet spirit? Does it mean that now that I am married I am no longer able to think or feel for myself? Am I now the property of my husband who makes all of the decisions for me? While studying the Greek meaning of this passage I realized that it is that of the hidden person in you, which is imperishable. It means to have a mild disposition, relying wholly on God to reprimand and burden your husbands heart. It means to have a tranquil spirit, where the spirit is, "the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides" (Strong's Concordance) As wives we are allowed to have feelings, thoughts and even decisions but when our husbands ask us to do something, we are to do it regardless what those feelings, thoughts or decisions tell us. That's the submissive part. If there is a conflict among our spirit we are to pray and ask God to work in our husbands and yet still remain peaceful inside. What a difficult task we must undertake. This is not easy but it is what God is commanding us to do therefore we must strive to do it!

  1. This is such a good idea, Kristen and i were just talking about how when a lot of women get married that they are clueless about how to run a home. This is not the case with you! But the best part of this is that you are sharing a part of your life with other people about what you do. It is great!
