4 Years

May 19th marked 11 years since Dirk and I boarded a plane headed for Australia. I was 16, he was 17 and we barely knew each other.

We went on this trip in May 2000 with our church youth group. Neither of us were interested in finding a relationship but by the end of the trip we had begun a good friendship.

Over the next few months we hung out with our group of friends and just got to know each other. In October of 2000 we became something more, although not labeling ourselves as boyfriend and girlfriend.

We went to homecoming together...
and Jr. Sr. Prom.

We graduated high school at the same time...

and college...

and then exactly 7 years after we left for Australia, on May 19, 2007, we were married...

I recently read a quote from a Facebook friend's cousin's wedding toast, it said, "May you look back on your wedding day as the day you loved each other the least." I can truly say that I loved Dirk much less that day than I do today. I was so full of love for him that day that I wouldn't have been able to imagine that I could love him more, but I do.

I have learned over these past 4 years that love is so much more than excitement and feelings. It's sacrifice. It's finding ways to enjoy each other among the mundane every day things. It's laughing together at the little things Makenzie does. It's looking forward to alone time together but instead falling asleep in each other's arms because we are so exhausted. It's listening when you feel like zoning out, smiling when you feel like being stoic and being empathetic even when you feel like crying yourself. Love is so much more than I could have described 4 years ago. I know I have just touched the surface but I have learned so much in these past four years. I am so lucky to be married to my best friend. It sounds so cliche but it's true. I'd rather spend time with him than with anyone else. He's the only person I feel 100% myself around. Love is what Dirk and I have and I am so thankful.

We spent Thrusday - Saturday in Santa Barbara. Makenzie spent her first nights away from us and did great! Here are just a few of the pictures from our trip. I was so nervous about going but I highly suggest that every couple take some time away. It was so refreshing!
